HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL To Visit MARY DAVIS™ Shop In Wedmore, Somerset
January 2007 - UK Company e-moor Ltd., who design and manufacture the MARY DAVIS™ Knitwear label, are pleased to confirm that HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL will be visiting the MARY DAVIS™ flagship shop in Wedmore, Somerset on Thursday 15th February 2007.
HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL will be visiting the MARY DAVIS™ Shop in her official capacity as President of UK Fashion Exports.
One thing this Somerset based company is passionate about is bringing to the market a product that has been made exclusively in the United Kingdom. We currently export to Japan, USA and Germany, whilst also supplying top end Boutiques across the UK.
The brand is based on a process that started as a favour to a desperate friend, by the designer Mary Davis, to help rescue her husband's shrunk favourite jumper. This has turned into a design brand that is instantly recognisable as a 'Mary Davis'! Mary saw in this accident the exciting potential for a new kind of knitwear.
Mary Davis, the lady, has become synonymous with the amazingly different knitwear that she designs. So much so that it is the brand MARY DAVIS™ that we now talk about!
MARY DAVIS™ is a wholly UK designed and produced product. As a company, as well as being passionate about keeping our manufacturing in the UK, that passion extends to keeping alive traditional manufacturing and design skills. Our hand knit range is all made by out-workers in England, which is then collected in Somerset to be hand-finished and felted to produce the completed garment.
Recognising that this would not enable us to grow the company substantially, we spent 18 months investigating working with UK Knitwear manufacturers to produce a manufactured fabric, for us to embellish, to produce a lower price, higher volume product to supplement the hand knit range.
This process was a real eye-opener. Finding British factories that still make knitwear was a challenge. The majority of companies we approached were set up for standard knitwear manufacturing. Finding companies prepared and able to become involved in a new, unique product was challenging. Add to that the fact that at first many factories were sceptical, as they had suffered bad experiences with designers using them to make samples, but then taking the business abroad for actual production, it would have been very easy for a less committed company to go and look overseas for production.
This was something we were absolutely not prepared to do. We want our products to remain British, using this country's factories and our design skills. We are making an innovative and high quality range of garments that we want to be proud of, both in design terms and also ethically.
Our tenacity was rewarded. We have now built a successful and rewarding working relationship with a few select UK manufacturers and have in production our machine knit range. We could not be more delighted now, with this visit, being recognised as an English manufacturer of merit.
The range today consists of the Hand-Knit Jackets (and we call them jackets as they are so much more than a cardigan!) Waistcoats, Skirts, Tops, Hats, Scarves and Cushions plus a range of machine-knit Jackets, Waistcoats, Hats and Scarves. All these garments are still hand embellished and hand-finished, then felted, to retain the unique MARY DAVIS™ look.
This really is knitwear with a twist, quite literally in some cases! Mary makes use of texture and finish to create a range of garments that are as eye catching as they are easy to wear.
In the winter we have a range of 100% wool and cashmere garments which are felted to give the unique and durable texture.
In the summer, a range of cotton Jackets, Jumpers and Tops.
